Mike Chavez (b. Manila 1969) is a full-time, Melbourne
based artist whose works have been exhibited in solo,
group and juried exhibitions across Australia. He draws
from his own experiences as an Asian growing up in post
White-Australia and his paintings based on pickup trucks
explore the themes of racism and parochialism through
their use of bold images, slogans and repetition. In works
featuring anthropomorphized animal characters he examines
the complexities of the human condition while in other
works based on his own family, he looks at life's daily
travails. Mike's more politically charged works reflect
a keen sense of satire, honed during his stint as an editorial
cartoonist. Mike is also a former animator who has worked
on films for Disney, Warner Brothers and Dreamworks. After
a successful career working on other people's art, he
now just wants to work on his own.
